Application of Social Tenure Domain Model (STDM) in Mapping Institutional Status, Tenure Systems & Resources
Resource Conflict Institute (RECONCILE) and Smallholder Dairy Commercialization Programme (SDCP) entered into a memorandum of understanding to implement mapping of land tenure and natural resources to apply STDM in the mapping and documenting the status of dairy cooperatives in Uasin Gishu and Nandi Counties respectively. The context under which the Nandi and Uasin Gishu documentation process of the dairy cooperatives societies were to help the programme and the county partners have a sense of the status of the cooperatives, their capacity and performance. The planned activities were undertaken within July to August, 2018 which facilitated the existing partnership between RECONCILE and SDCP.
The outcome of this exercise targeted contributing to the programme overall goal; contribute to incresing the income of the poor rural households that depend substantially on production and trade of dairy products for their livelihoods. In wider terms, the mapping and documenting the cooperatives: resource expansion, institutional strengthening, linkages as well as services towards sustainability. Overall objective of the assignment was to apply Social Tenure Domain Model in mapping cooperative institutional status and define the tenure systems of resources of cooperatives in Uasin Gishu and Nandi counties.
The specific objectives are:
- To determine the institutional arrangements of the cooperative societies in the context of the smallholder dairy commercialization programme in Uasin Gishu and Nandi counties.
- To evaluate the implications of the institutional arrangements of cooperatives land tenure security in Uasin Gishu and Nandi counties.
- To develop spatial outputs detailing the location of cooperative societies in Uasin Gishu and Nandi counties.
